Black Fly Program

The community of New Haven – Riverdale, like many communities on Prince Edward Island, has undertaken a program to control black flies.

The numerous fast running streams within and adjacent to New Haven – Riverdale are the breeding ground for biting black flies. In 1991, the community took on the initiative to start a Black Fly Control Program. With a noticeable relief of biting black flies, New Haven – Riverdale has budgeted to control them ever since. This control method uses a biological larvicide (VectoBac) which does not affect non-target, aquatic, invertebrate predators and parasites. Most notably, Vectobac is biodegradable and very environmentally friendly.
